Step 1: Material Selection – The Foundation of Everything

A good screw starts with the right material choice. The most common material is carbon steel, which is classified by carbon content into low, medium, and high carbon steel. For corrosive environments, stainless steel such as 302, 304, and 316 is the mainstream choice. Brass, aluminum alloy, and titanium alloy are also used for special applications. Taiyuanfeng strictly selects high-quality wire rods to ensure every screw is excellent right from the source.

Step 2: Forming – From Wire Rod to Blank

There are two main forming methods: cold heading and machining. Cold heading is suitable for mass production, offering high efficiency and material utilization of over 90%. Machining is used for small batches or special-shaped screws. Taiyuanfeng uses advanced multi-station cold heading machines to produce hundreds of precision blanks per minute, ensuring both efficiency and dimensional consistency.

Step 3: Die Clamping Process – The Key to Precision Forming

After the first blow, the blank of some screws needs further precision forming to create the final head shape (e.g., hex head, countersunk head, torx head). This is where the die clamping process comes in. In a closed die cavity, the upper and lower dies (or left and right dies) clamp tightly together, and a high impact or pressure forces the metal to completely fill every corner of the die. The die clamping process ensures dimensional accuracy, sharp edges, and surface smoothness of the screw head. Without die clamping, complex head shapes such as hex flange heads or internal torx heads would be impossible to produce. Taiyuanfeng’s clamping dies are precision-ground, with closing gaps controlled within micrometers, guaranteeing every screw head is perfectly uniform.

Step 4: Thread Forming – Engraving the Soul

Threads are the soul of a screw. Thread rolling (including flat die rolling and cylindrical die rolling) is the most common process. Both are cold extrusion methods that do not cut metal fibers, resulting in stronger threads than machining. Taiyuanfeng’s thread rolling machines are equipped with high-precision dies, producing accurate dimensions and smooth surfaces to ensure perfect engagement.

Step 5: Heat Treatment – Giving Internal Strength

After forming, screws need heat treatment to achieve the desired mechanical properties. The typical process includes quenching and tempering.

Quenching: Heating the screws to above the critical temperature (usually 800–900°C) and then cooling them rapidly. This transforms the metal structure into martensite, significantly increasing hardness.

Tempering: After quenching, the screw is hard but also brittle; it must be reheated to a lower temperature (300–600°C), held at that temperature, and then cooled. Tempering eliminates internal stresses and balances hardness and toughness, ensuring the screw is both strong and resistant to fracture.

Taiyuanfeng uses continuous heat treatment furnaces to precisely control heating temperature, holding time, and cooling rate, achieving an optimal balance between hardness and toughness.

Step 5: Surface Finishing – Protection and Decoration

Surface finishing not only prevents corrosion but may also give screws special functions. Common processes include electroplating (e.g., zinc plating), Dacromet, black oxide, and phosphating. Taiyuanfeng provides customized surface finishing solutions based on the customer’s service environment, such as offering hydrogen-embrittlement-free Dacromet coatings for automotive fasteners.

Step 6: Quality Inspection – No Room for Defects

A single defective screw can cause equipment failure or even bridge damage. Taiyuanfeng has established a full-process quality control system, covering dimensional inspection, mechanical testing, metallographic analysis, and salt spray testing. High-speed optical sorters can inspect hundreds of screws per minute and automatically reject non-conforming parts.
